Congratulations to Garden City Elementary School and Woodland Elementary School, recipients of $2,500 in grant funding from the District 279 Foundation.
This fall, Garden City Elementary School will participate in a ‘Scholars Get Inspired Through Clay’ project. Grant writer Shelly Korby, EL specialist at Garden City Elementary School shared in the grant application that this project, “will provide each Garden City scholar with the opportunity to explore learning through clay. A local artist/teacher from Northern Clay will inspire students’ artistic expression through clay and help them create their own clay project.” ‘Scholars Get Inspired Through Clay’ will serve about 340 scholars at Garden City Elementary School, and the school plans to host a family night to showcase scholars’ clay projects.
In January 2024, a Youth Frontiers Kindness Retreat is planned for fifth graders at Woodland Elementary School. This high-energy day will give students tools in developing empathy and promoting kindness. The retreat’s focus is on empowering kids to use kindness to include others, be respectful and to make their school and community a better place. Grant writer Robin Moe, fifth-grade teacher at Woodland Elementary School, wrote as part of the grant application, “Our fifth-grade students are looked at as the leaders and role-models for our Woodland community. Our goal is [for] the students gain knowledge and skills to develop empathy and promote kindness in our building. We want our school to be a safe, kind and respectful place where students feel accepted, included, and can be their authentic selves.”
