Fair Oaks, Woodland elementary schools host authors

Two district elementary schools recently brought in talented authors to share their books and their career journeys with students.

At Fair Oaks, California-based author Pam Munoz Ryan came to read her newest book, “El Nino,” to the school’s fourth and fifth graders. Munoz Ryan is well-known for her book “Esperanza Rising,” among others, and all Fair Oaks fourth grade students read this book together. The students came prepared with a variety of thoughtful questions for the author, who visited as part of a Scholastic book tour.

At Woodland, a current and former staff member at the school teamed up to create a children’s book titled “We Need our Teachers.” Destiny Pierce, who taught as a Four Star teacher before leaving last year to pursue her license in elementary education, authored the book, while current ESP Kaycie Johnson created the illustrations.

“We Need our Teachers” highlights several current and former Woodland staff members and students as it shares a touching message about the many reasons teachers are essential in our world. The pair released the book at a launch event at the school during Teacher Appreciation Week as another way to honor educators.
